ChatGPT debate: Academic dishonesty, plagiarism

ChatGPT has promising applications in the clinical context, but the Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithm may not be ready to fully replace the family doctor just yet, according to researchers. 
This is particularly true when it comes to effectively deciding which drugs to prescribe for illnesses. The potential of AI to deliver accurate and safe treatment guidance might alter how we approach patient care at a time when the emergence of antibiotic resistance poses a huge danger to global health.
We anticipate further research into this technology with great interest because of its potential applications in healthcare. There are still limitations, but ChatGPT can answer certain open-ended medical concerns nearly as effectively as the typical human physician could.
The inherent danger of experimenting with cutting-edge technology compels everyone involved to proceed with extreme care. As AI finds more and more uses in the medical field, several questions about how the law will need to change to accommodate it, arise.
If ChatGPT were a human test taker, it would have aced the vast majority of the questions. Nevertheless, it was hard for the chatbot to respond to in-depth interview questions about the candidate’s personal life since it lacked empathy, memory, and other human traits.
ChatGPT excels in answering challenging questions, presenting logical arguments, and having complicated discussions, but it cannot show adequate proof of its “humanness” because it lacks personal experiences and sentiments. Technology has been shown to be capable of writing convincing phony scientific abstracts, a task that does not involve human emotion, according to a paper released in April.
Researchers from Northwestern Medicine found that reviewers of a database of scientific abstracts were only able to identify fraudulent papers 68 per cent of the time. This implies that ChatGPT might be used incorrectly to “outsmart” people, which would reduce its universal accessibility.
The model’s creator, OpenAI, admits that ChatGPT’s inability to access the internet means it may provide inaccurate results. ChatGPT’s limited understanding of “events after 2021” or the most recent version of data it was trained on, further reduces its accuracy.
In addition, the AI model receives reinforcement whenever it correctly identifies and predicts patterns within the training data. This information is then used during execution. However, in a medical environment, particularly when summarising patient notes, it might lead to incorrect predictions of occurrences and treatments that never occurred.
Not being able to access PHI (protected health information) is another major shortcoming of ChatGPT. Thus, it is a violation of the Act and terms of service to employ the model in healthcare processes (such as clinical note analysis and summary) if Open AI has access to protected patient data.
ChatGPT is still in its early stages as a machine-learning model and cannot yet fully replace human medical professionals. It’s a useful resource for improving healthcare workers’ efficiency and effectiveness. Advances in natural language processing (NLP) methods and other artificial intelligence technologies are on the threshold of ushering in a huge transformation in the healthcare business.
We are being given a sneak peek into the future of medicine with the release of ChatGPT and other recent advances in healthcare-related AI. Patients will now have access to the full potential of exponential technologies thanks to the deluge of healthcare data that is rapidly becoming accessible.
As the focus of medicine turns from treating individual symptoms to keeping patients healthy over time, the availability of large amounts of data and the use of AI by scientists will greatly advance the field of longevity studies. The issue, though, is whether or not we are prepared for this transformation.
Another dilemma is that the educational, pedagogical, and research implications of ChatGPT and other contemporary AI technologies are mixed. It has been suggested by researchers that ChatGPT should be used in the classroom to help teachers and pupils.
According to cutting-edge research created in large part using ChatGPT, the programme has the potential to provide rising and exciting prospects for the academic community, but also faces substantial problems.
ChatGPT, released in November 2022, is the newest chatbot and AI platform heralded for its ability to transform academia. With its increasing sophistication, however, the technology has also raised worries about academic dishonesty and plagiarism.
AI is now available to students outside of academic institutions, and tech giants like Microsoft and Google are fast embedding it into their products like the Chrome web browser and the Office suite. The cat is out of the bag so to speak, so colleges must now adjust to a new paradigm in which AI usage is taken for granted.
With every new revolutionary technology – and this is a revolutionary technology – there will be winners and losers. Those who can’t adjust to the new normal will fall behind. The successful ones will be the practical ones who figure out how to use this technology to their advantage.
Whatever the future holds for academic technology, this should act as a wake-up call to faculty members to re-evaluate the manner they conduct assessments and the steps they take to prevent academic dishonesty.
It is crucial that we be ready to harness the potential of AI and data to enhance the health and well-being of the public as we continue to push the limits of AI and NLP in healthcare. We must also be ready to deal with the ethical and social repercussions of this technology.
