Former rhythmic gymnastics champion Tamara Yerofeyeva to conduct Master Class in KL

Four-time world rhythmic gymnastics champion Tamara Yerofeyeva will be in Malaysia to conduct a Master Class on behalf of Sarina Rhythmic Gymnastics Club (SRGC).

The Master Class, on Sept 16 and 17, is for gymnasts of all levels.

SRGC founder, Sarina Sundara Rajah, said she was excited to have the multiple World Cup winner and Olympic finalist perform at the National Gymnastics Centre in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.

Sarina hailed Yerofeyeva as a contemporary and had always admired her.

“Whether your child is new to rhythmic gymnastics or striving towards competitive events, we are confident they will benefit immensely from the Master Class,” said Sarina, who won a team gold in rhythmic gymnastics at the 1998 Commonwealth Games.

“Yerofeyeva accomplished so much, and I hope those who attend the Master Class can pick up some pointers from her. She is 41 but still performs with the Cirque Du Soleil in Las Vegas.

“Only the best athletes perform with them, and it will be thrilling to watch her live.”

Sarina added that the Master Class would act as the launch of the Piala Puteri Championship, a new competition SRGC is organising in December.

She said Piala Puteri is to empower young women and act as a platform for amateur rhythmic gymnasts to shine while expressing their unique personalities.

“But that is in a few months. Now, it is about Yerofeyeva, and how she can inspire future generations of gymnasts,” said Sarina.

There is more to the Master Class, however, as Sarina revealed that there will be Power Talk sessions with Yerofeyeva and Niloy Banerjee, the resident representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei Darussalam on Dec 15.

Yerofeyeva will also sign autographs and answer questions from the participants.

“We hope the sessions will help shape a positive and resilient mindset, and instil responsible citizenship among the young athletes,” said Sarina.

“Sports is more than physical training. It is about being global citizens who contribute to sustainability, and bring value to their community.”
