The Malaysian government has taken various measures to address the ethical, legal, economic, and social implications related to artificial intelligence (AI).
This includes creating an environment and ecosystem that supports the ethical and responsible design and development of AI.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the National AI Office (NAIO), which will be launched at the end of this year, aims to position Malaysia as a key player in AI in Southeast Asia and beyond.
“NAIO is capable of enhancing the country’s AI capabilities by fostering innovation, promoting cross-sector collaboration, and supporting the integration of AI into government, industry, and community frameworks.
“Additionally, NAIO will lead initiatives that leverage AI to strengthen the digital economy, improve public service performance, and contribute to sustainable development,” said Gobind.
He mentioned that qualified candidates with extensive experience in AI would be appointed to NAIO, ensuring that the development of policies and innovations in Malaysia remains on the right track.
He was responding to a question from Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng (BN-Tanjung Piai) regarding the level of AI capability among Malaysians and the ministry’s plans to address the ethical, legal, economic, and social implications related to AI, as well as AI-powered tools for critical national sectors.
Gobind noted that the Science, Technology, and Innovation Ministry launched the National Guidelines on AI Governance and Ethics (AIGE) on Sept 20. AIGE adapts seven key principles necessary for the responsible development and use of AI.
“The guidelines, which have also been refined by the Digital Ministry, will examine the AI ecosystem comprehensively, covering users, policymakers from government, agencies, organisations, institutions, designers, as well as technology providers and suppliers. This is to ensure that social and ethical values are adhered to, ensuring that AI technology is used for the public good without disregarding human rights and individual security,” said Gobind.
