Have you ever found yourself slouched in your chair after midnight with a pending assignment, but no motivation? All you want to do is binge on the latest episodes of Planet Earth or Hell’s Kitchen, but you need to hand in your essay.
There is a way to finish that essay in about five minutes, and it involves artificial intelligence (AI) writing assistants.
What are those? Here’s a quick guide to writing AIs.
What are writing AIs?
A type of AI designed to serve as a writing assistant to the user by generating text and improving phrases or sentences. They can be used to give information or write essays.
The area of AI writing uses both machine learning and natural language processing to produce written content. AI writing tools are growing smarter and more human-like, thanks to their ability to understand patterns of language use, grammar, and style.
How do they work?
AI writing detection relies on reverse engineering language patterns to determine predicted texts using patterns, such as grammar, language, and style. A code breaks down these texts and an algorithm is used to find patterns within the words.
AI writing assistants are also trained using real-life data. As they learn from data they collect, they improve at producing a natural human output. This is called natural language generation.
What can they do?
Depending on which website or writing AI you use, you can either write the title or a phrase that writes an essay for you or write sentences or a paragraph, in which the website paraphrases your words in different ways, depending on what you choose. If you want to use AI writing, there are different ways you can apprehend these technologies, such as through recommendations, or website links. There are also apps and add-ons that can be used. Most of these websites offer different ways in which they can be used. Most are obvious, and some have a label, such as “chat here.”
Who created it?
Though mathematician Alan Turing did some of the initial important work involving AI, it was John McCarthy, also known as the “father of artificial intelligence”, who first coined the term in the 1950s. McCarthy came to be known as one of the most influential people in his field. He did a lot of great work in Computer Science and AI.
What was the first AI?
Many people claimed to have invented the first AI, but the earliest successful AI writing was by Christopher Strachey in 1951. Strachey was part of a group of influential computer scientists alongside Alan Turing. His creation was a draughts game programme and it worked successfully in 1951. By the summer of 1952, the programme could play a complete game of draughts at a reasonable pace.
Is it illegal?
AI is still legal in most countries, but Italy has become the first country in the West to ban AI tools like ChatGPT, the famous artificial intelligence chatbot. This means they aren’t allowed to replicate or plagiarise content from other sources.
Furthermore, AI writing tools must not be used to generate illegal or unethical content, such as hate speech, false information, or spam. As AI writing tools progress, they may eventually replace some human writers in some businesses. It is vital to realise, however, that AI writing is not a total substitute for human creativity and skill.
Can you use it for work?
Yes, AI is encouraged in workplaces. Involving AI in business environments lessens the time spent on repetitive tasks, increases employee productivity, and enhances customer experience.
Are they reliable?
They are generally reliable, but AI systems can make mistakes because they are unable to judge right from wrong, fake from fact. They do become smarter with time, but they have yet to achieve 100 per cent accuracy.
Are they free?
A majority of the best websites have to be paid on a monthly basis. However, there are some websites, such as ChatGPT and QuillBot, that can be used for free. A lot of websites offer a free trial.
Is there a limit to what you can ask it to write?
There is almost nothing you can’t ask AI to do. Anything to do with data, it can respond accordingly. However, in word AI, the “artificial” part is crucial since AI cannot think or feel. It lacks the capability to understand questions of the future, such as “My kids are hungry, and they want pasta, but I want salad. What do you think I should cook?” Even modern AI is said to be far from capable of having a conversation.
Can you use any browser?
Yes, most AI tools can be used on any browser. For example, ChatGPT doesn’t require any special browser or software to function. You can access it from any device with an internet connection. However, some applications that use AI may require specific browsers or software to function.
What are the names of some of those writing AIs?
Famous writing AI assistants are:
QuillBot – a paraphrasing tool, while
ChatGPT, Grammarly, Jasper, Peppertype, Writesonic, Lavender, Writecream, ContentBot, TextExpander, Ludwig, and Scalenut – are writing AIs.
Why is it hot news now?
Most of these writing AI tools can understand and respond to a wide range of topics and assist you in a human-like manner. They help users generate text, answer questions, and even help with tasks like language translation and summarisation.
As these programmes increase in popularity, ethical questions will naturally emerge about their usage.
