Leicester could follow Southampton back to Championship this weekend

Two weeks after Southampton became the first team to be relegated from the English Premier League, fellow struggler Leicester could see its stay in the top tier cut short.

A third team – Ipswich – faces the drop next week.

All three teams came up from the Championship last season, but have failed to put up a challenge and will make a swift return to the second tier of English football, nine months after earning promotion.

As it stands, Southampton has 10 points from 32 matches, with Leicester collecting 18 and Ipswich on 21.

West Ham and Wolves have 35 points each and need four more points to guarantee another season in the Premier League.

Leicester hosts Liverpool on April 21, while Ipswich welcomes Arsenal on the same day.

Interestingly, if Ipswich somehow beats Arsenal, and Liverpool collects three points at King Power Stadium, the Reds would win the title.

Liverpool fans, however, would rather wait another week as they prefer to see their team clinch the title at Anfield when it hosts Tottenham on April 27.

In 2020, when Liverpool won the league, it did so after Chelsea defeated Manchester City. To add to Liverpool’s woes, it was at the height of Covid-19 and no fans were allowed into the stadium.

After 32 games, Liverpool is top with 76 points, 13 ahead of Arsenal, with six matches left.

Newcastle, which won its first trophy after a 51-year drought, has moved to third in the standings with 59 points, only four behind Arsenal.

If the London club drops more points – it has only won two of its last five matches – it could end the season third.

Newcastle will travel to Arsenal on May 18, a week after the latter faces Liverpool at Anfield.

With Arsenal now focused on the Champions League after reaching the semi-finals in midweek, Newcastle will hope the Londoners take it seriously as it plays Paris St-Germain on April 30 and May 8. The final is June 1.

If Arsenal loses focus on the EPL, Newcastle can finish second for the first time since 1997.
