A few days ago, my wife and I went to send some food to my niece who lives at an apartment nearby.
We had told her to wait at the guardhouse. When we arrived, she was nowhere to be seen, or rather, she was standing a distance away and we didn’t spot her.
She appeared suddenly with her face mask on.
Why did she have such a guarded approach, I asked myself. There was no one around except us and she was in our safety bubble. There was no immediate threat of any kind.
This 17-year-old girl was just acting responsibly. She had me in awe actually because I didn’t expect her to take the precaution when it was relatively safe.
Indeed, I am proud of her for acting such. That’s how it should be and it is also a lesson not to make negative assumptions about our youngsters.
Many of them are very responsible – much more than grown-ups. No moaning or groaning, no pointing fingers, no tantrums. Just follow the standard operating procedures to safeguard themselves and others.
That said, it is disgusting how a number of so-called adults have been conducting themselves during the Covid-19 pandemic.
It is no surprise that some VIPs are also starting to fall ill. And just when I thought they have special immunity. They don’t. The only immunity they seem to have is against facing action.
Maybe not all are like that but there are enough of them out there to disgust the rest of the population. And these people are supposed to advise us, lead us and care for us.
They should be ashamed that teenagers like my niece have to show them what being kind, considerate and responsible is all about.
Do the right thing even when no one is looking. That’s called integrity and many have proven that they just don’t have it.
