Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh is waiting for police to wrap up their investigations into the alleged assault of a football fan during the FA Cup final.
“You are the first to actually ask me … I kid you not,” Yeoh told Twentytwo13 at a football clinic in Taman Melur, Ampang, Selangor this evening.
“This is a police case, let the police do their work.”
The alleged incident took place during the final between Johor Darul Ta’zim and KL City FC at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Johor. The Southern Tigers won 2-0 to lift the trophy.
Asked why the ministry chose to keep mum over the incident, despite it being five days since the fan alleged that he was attacked by Johor Military Force personnel at the stadium, Yeoh said: “Even the dodgeball incident, we are waiting for police to wrap up (investigations).”
Several weeks ago, the Malaysian sports scene was rocked by a sexual harassment case involving a dodgeball coach.
As for Saturday’s episode, Iskandar Puteri OCPD, Assistant Commissioner Rahmat Ariffin, in a statement, confirmed that a police report had been lodged by the fan, in Kuala Lumpur.
KL City FC, in a statement on July 25, “expressed profound sadness and deep regret” over the incident, adding that it “maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of crowd control aggression”, and requested that the “relevant authorities make public their findings”.
To date, there has not been a single word by the FA of Malaysia and the Malaysian Football League regarding the incident.
When told that the incident took place at a sporting venue that was supposed to be safe, Yeoh stood firm, and said: “Police case, let the police wrap up their investigations first.”
