Liverpool could clinch English Premier League title, FA Cup down to final four

Liverpool

Liverpool can win its record-equalling 20th league title when it hosts Tottenham at Anfield on April 27. It only needs a draw to take an unassailable lead in the table, having collected 79 points from 33 matches.

Once the title is confirmed, Arend Martijn ‘Arne’ Slot will become the third youngest person to lead a team to the Premier League title. Only Jose Mourinho (42) and Kenny Dalglish (44) were younger than the 46-year-old Slot when they guided Chelsea (2005) and Blackburn (1995) respectively.

Slot and his captain, Virgil van Dijk, will also create history, as no Dutchmen have managed or captained a team to the Premier League title.

Liverpool’s closest rival, Arsenal, has accumulated 67 points from 34 games and can only reach a maximum of 79 points if it wins its four remaining matches.

Arsenal’s title challenge has faltered in recent weeks, collecting only 17 points from 10 games. It needs to stay focused as it has yet to confirm its ticket to next season’s Champions League, with Manchester City (61), Nottingham Forest (60), Newcastle (59), Chelsea (57) and Aston Villa (57) all within touching distance.

Any one of those six teams can still book the four remaining Champions League tickets.

Over at the bottom, Ipswich is likely to join Leicester and Southampton back in the Championship, even if it beats Newcastle on April 26.

Meanwhile, the FA Cup semifinals will see Crystal Palace facing Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest taking on Manchester City. Of the quartet, only Crystal Palace has never won football’s oldest competition.

Villa (1887, 1895, 1897, 1905, 1913, 1920, 1957) and Manchester City (1904, 1934, 1956, 1969, 2011, 2019, 2023) have seven wins each, while Forest has two victories (1898, 1959). Palace has reached two FA Cup finals — in 1990 and 2016 — losing both times to Manchester United.
