MAEPS: A truly Malaysian wedding destination

Imagine the beats of the kompang or the Indian thavil echoing through the very many tastefully decorated halls at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS).

Or a Chinese tea ceremony, with a beautiful green landscape serving as backdrop.

A 30-minute drive from Kuala Lumpur and the KL International Airport, MAEPS has earned a reputation as the venue of choice for mega events in the past – from concerts to auto-shows, travel fairs, and running events.

Located in Serdang, Selangor, it sits on 130 hectares of land belonging to the Malaysia Agriculture Research and Development Institute (Mardi).

It is also home to the biennial Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism Show (MAHA) and became a household name after serving as a temporary Covid-19 quarantine centre at the height of the pandemic in 2020.

Today, venue operator Mardi Corporation is eager to make it a truly Malaysian wedding destination.

Its chief executive officer, Zaidi Shahrim, said there have been enquiries to host private events and weddings in recent months.

“Today, when you mention MAEPS, people know where and who we are,” said Zaidi.

“MAEPS can cater to all types of weddings: Malay, Chinese, Indian, and other ethnicities. Big or small, intimate receptions, indoor or garden weddings, MAEPS can cater to the needs of every Malaysian.”

MAEPS’ cavernous halls allow 10 wedding receptions to be held simultaneously. Parking bays are ample, too.

“Unlike hotels, couples need not worry about having to book their wedding venue months, or years in advance at MAEPS.

“In addition, we have also just opened our state pavilions for weddings. The detailed architecture, finishing, and vibrant colours of each pavilion represent the respective states in Malaysia, and would be perfect for state-based, thematic wedding receptions.”

Zaidi said the 13 state pavilions – Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan, Sarawak, and Sabah – are set to be a hit among couples.

“Imagine if the bride is from Perak and the groom is from Terengganu … the reception can be held at these pavilions at once. It will feel just like home,” he said.

Zaidi added MAEPS offered a host of picturesque backdrops, including at its eight show grounds – vegetables, herbs, paddy, pineapples, floriculture, fishery, livestock, and machinery. This provides for unique wedding photo opportunities.

For as low as RM43,000, MAEPS can cater to 1,000 guests. This includes food, the wedding dais, tables, chairs, and audio and video facilities.

“Those with smaller budgets need not worry as we can customise the packages,” he said.

MAEPS also offers spots for garden-themed events.

Zaidi added that MAEPS has partnered with 70 caterers to meet the needs of customers.

“Couples can also bring their own food and drinks, and can even opt to go with their own caterers,” he added.

MAEPS is also suitable for meetings, seminars, and other corporate functions.
