In 1999, Manchester United became the only English club to win the English Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in the same season.
Flashback to 1977, and the Red Devils denied Liverpool that honour when they won the FA Cup final 2-1.
Liverpool, which had won the top-flight title at a canter, recovered from that loss to win the European final four days later.
Tomorrow, United will hope to rain on Manchester City’s parade, in the FA Cup final.
City wrapped up the Premier League title last Sunday and will play Inter Milan in the Champions League final next Sunday (3am). It will be the first time the Manchester clubs face each other in the FA Cup final.
United has held the upper hand in this competition, winning five of the last six encounters.
It hopes to sign off the season with a double, having won the League Cup in February.
If United does so, it will become the fifth club to win both domestic trophies in the same season. The first team to do it was Arsenal in 1992-1993.
Chelsea did it in 2006-2007 and City in 2018-2019. Liverpool is the only team to have done it twice – last season and 2000-01.
United’s Anthony Martial is out of the final after suffering an injury, but City’s record-breaking striker Erling Haaland is raring to go.
The Norwegian has scored 36 league goals, 12 more in the Champions League, three in the FA Cup, and one in the League Cup. That is 52 goals from only 51 matches.
Haaland has transformed City since his arrival in the summer. His goals are a reason the Citizens can dream of a treble.
City will start as the bookies’ favourite but has its eyes on a bigger prize next week.
