No MotoGP in Sepang this year, says SIC

Covid-19 claimed three new victims as Sepang International Circuit (SIC) chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif confirmed the Malaysia MotoGP has been cancelled.

The event was scheduled for Oct 31 to Nov 1.

The Argentina and Thailand Grand Prix are also cancelled.

“We are disappointed to announce the cancellation of the race,” said Shafriman.

“We were looking forward to watching on home ground, our local riders – Kasma Daniel (Onexox TKKR SAG Team), Khairul Idham Pawi (Petronas Sprinta Racing) and Hafizh Syahrin (Inde Aspar Team Moto2) – as well as Petronas Sprinta Racing, who have had a great start to the season.

“But with the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the safety of all is our main priority. We can’t afford to risk the health of others.

“It is sad news for MotoGP fans who have made the event what it is today.”

He said SIC has seen an increase in MotoGP spectators.

“I hope you keep supporting our local boys and team in the championship. We will come back bigger and better in 2021.”

The news does not come as a surprise as yesterday, Shafriman also confirmed SIC rejected the opportunity to host one round of the Formula One Championship later this year.

Meanwhile, FIM, IRTA and Dorna Sports revealed an additional Grand Prix is to be added to the 2020 FIM MotoGP World Championship calendar.

After the Valencia GP, the season finale would take place from Nov 20-22 at a venue in Europe. The host venue will be confirmed on Aug 10.
