Sun-kissed 1858 Semungkis, the perfect tonic for weary city-folk

“Can we stay here again, please?”

Those words will ring in my head for a long time.

My five-year-old son and my friend’s children (one aged seven, and the other, four) sported long faces. For the trio, the two nights at 1858 Semungkis in Batu 14, Hulu Langat, were simply not enough.

1858 Semungkis isn’t some fancy, luxurious six-star villa. Neither does it have some of the best head pillows – for me, at least.

But it was full of soul. It’s a home.

The minute we drove into the grounds on Friday evening, there was this aura that captivated us. I kept telling myself that this is where we should live, surrounded by chirping birds, flowers, and fruit trees.

1858 Semungkis has three main structures – the main building that has a hall and dining area with a kitchen just outside with three bedrooms upstairs, another block with two bedrooms, complete with attached bathrooms, and a warm rumah kampung (village house) that makes a perfect backdrop for the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri festival.

With six bedrooms, 11 beds and six baths, 1858 Semungkis can comfortably accommodate 16 guests.

The home adopts a minimalist approach but is well equipped. There’s a whole lot of pots and pans, dishes, cutlery, and even a barbeque pit. There’s a fridge, microwave oven, oven, gas stove, a kettle, a karaoke machine, and some interesting books. Perhaps, an additional board game or two would be nice.

The other beauty of the place? It is located right next to Sungai Semungkis, where guests can take a dip while enjoying the great outdoors. The insects, and the sound of the flowing river provide a soothing, calming orchestra for the weary soul. The river is shallow enough for the children to have fun, and good enough for the adults to laze in the cool water.

That’s not all. It’s just a 15-minute drive from Bandar Baru Ampang. So, the journey won’t tire you.

There are numerous food outlets and convenience stores in the area. We were there during the fasting month, yet, it was still easy to get food. In fact, one can order food via the many online food delivery platforms and your food will be sent to your doorstep.

The comfortable setting resulted in smiles and laughter throughout our short stay. The RM2,068 per night price tag, as advertised on Airbnb, promises wonderful memories and plenty of Instagrammable moments.

The last time my school mates and I enjoyed such a vacation was some seven years ago. Our destination then was a jungle resort in Serendah, Selangor.

This time around, our children took centre stage, but we were happy that they had a fun time outdoors. Plenty of fun, laughter, and happy faces all around.

I promised Junior that we would visit 1858 Semungkis again. Hopefully, that day will come soon.

If you are planning for a great outing with your family or friends, give 1858 Semungkis a shot. I hope you will be charmed by its rustic simplicity and go home smiling.
