Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson, a 12-time Flyweight world champion is itching to take on Danny ‘The King’ Kingad at ONE: Century today.
The two ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Championship finalists return to the Ryōgoku Kokugikan in Japan where Johnson hopes to win a new title and give Kingad the second loss of his career.
“This bout is very important. There’s a sweet belt that I want to add to my collection and have a shot at ONE Flyweight’s world champion, Adriano Moraes,” said Johnson.
“I’m excited to face Kingad. He’s only got one loss in his entire career – against Moraes – so he’s definitely legit. Now I’m ready to go out there and see how I fare against one of the best in Asia.”
The American superstar has been training non-stop after hitting the ground running in ONE Championship’s inaugural tournament.
He was tested in his debut – in the Grand Prix’s quarterfinals against Yuya Wakamatsu, before winning with a guillotine choke.
Four months later, he had to dig deep to eke out a unanimous decision win over Tatsumitsu Wada.
“The World Grand Prix is a lot of work. I’ve been in training camp since January. We fought in March, took maybe a week off, and got right back in training camp to fight in August,” Johnson revealed.
“We took two weeks off, and now I’m about to compete in Japan. It’s fun, but it’s a lot of work. I’m looking forward to getting it done with. Whether I win or lose, I’m taking some time off to enjoy what I’ve just accomplished.”
Kingad, the Team Lakay stalwart holds an 11-1 record and the Filipino’s accomplishments have impressed the legendary ‘Mighty Mouse’.
“The Team Lakay guys are very tough and very athletic, especially Danny, and he is a wushu champion.
“He has great scrambles, and he is able to get off his back when he shouldn’t be able to but everybody has weaknesses.
“We have to see if I can exploit those weaknesses when we lock horns.”
