Enforcement personnel from the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry raided three outlets selling android boxes in a shopping mall in Klang.
Three Malaysians were detained in the raid on Monday.
The ministry’s enforcement director, Azman Adam, said 25 android boxes worth RM8,567, were seized in the raid, involving 15 personnel.
“Three locals, aged between 39 and 44, were arrested under Section 43AA of the Copyright Act, 1987. If found guilty, they can be fined between RM10,000 and RM200,000, or sent to prison for not more than 20 years, or both.”
Azman said the Copyright (Amendment) Act, 2022 that came into effect on March 18, is focused on eradicating digital piracy.
The amended Act sees the introduction of new streaming, and linking-related offences. This includes a law against those providing or sharing access to an online location containing pirated works.
The Act also provides for the authorities to go after those who facilitate copyright infringement by manufacturing, importing, selling, or hiring any streaming technology.
The sale of android boxes has been booming in recent years due to a lack of enforcement. They are still easily available in malls and on e-commerce websites.
